Home Learning

We have been talking as a class about how we can be more creative with our home learning. As you know, Year 5/6 students are expected to learn weekly spelling words (except first and last weeks of term, and camp week), read every day and practice maths basic facts. They can also work on their writing at home on their Google Docs. Anything extra is up to them. Some students may wish to research something of interest to them or do something with their family as part of home learning.

Some people came up with some amazing ideas for making learning spelling words more fun.
Here are some of the ideas:
* Spell out your words with Lego or toys
* Bounce a ball or jump a skipping rope as you say your words
* Time yourself and see how quickly you can spell the words correctly

Jacob had a go at spelling out his words using Lego. Looks like fun!

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE
* Find out about Labour Day. Why do we have it? What is the history of Labour Day? Present your findings and give it to Mrs Hanson by this Friday for some house points (and maybe Treasure Box!)

Team 23's Week 1, Term 4

Hello everybody this is Eva Howison & Ryan Andrews. We are going to tell you what we did this week.

The first thing we did was finish our Persuasive Writing. This is on our google docs. We are trying to persuade someone at home to change a rule. Nearly everyone is finished it!

The next thing we did is do a haiku or a tanka about our holidays. For a haiku the syllables are
5
7
5
then for a Tanka the syllables are
5
7
5
7
7

The next thing we did is was our calendar art we did the Canterbury Plains. They look amazing.
If you want to learn how do draw it this is what you'll need this stuff:

Pastels
Paper
Crayons
Blue dye
A pencil
A ruler

Follow these steps to make your own Canterbury plains

1:Rule a line for 1/3 of the page
2:Draw your river
3:Draw a line beside your river with your ruler (make sure its up and down)
4: Keep on drawing more lines across your page don't go over the 1/3 line
5:Then do some uneven lines across each indvidial vertical lines
6:Dye above the 1/3 blue for the sky
7:Draw on the mountains on the 1/3 line colour in the bottom of the mountains green.
8:Use pastels to colour in the different feilds (tip use lots of greens and browns)
9:Then use a white pastel to do the tops of the mountains
10: You are done on your canterbury plains

The last thing we did that was exiting was Athletics Rotation.
The first one we did was High Jump.
Then Fitness which isn't in the real thing
Then we did Sprints
Then Discus
The last one was Long jump

Thats all for now and we will see you next time bye!

End of Term 3

Room 23 had an incredibly busy end of Term 3! We worked really hard on the dance showcase that our Senior team created. The part of Christchurch's story that we told was the future of Christchurch. More photos are to come but here are a couple of photos of us all together!

Check back here next term, we hope to be doing lots more blogging!

week 6 times

This week Room 23 has been having good times. Firstly yesterday we had a healthy shared lunch. The table was full of vegetables and fruit of rainbow colours. Some people tried new types of food like pita bread or capsicum. It's linked with a program called Food For Thought. We were food detectives which means we looked at the back of packs of foods to see if they were healthy. Our class got given $60 to spend on a healthy shared lunch. Also we planned a menu for the class so we knew what we were going to buy.

We are practicing a dance for the end of term showcase which tells a story through movement and actions. Room 23 has worked hard on this dance piece in the afternoons. At first we did the 16 beat movement where we chose 'ing' words for our topic. Examples: Generating, flying, growing and hovering. We are choreographers in our dance piece.

In writing our class started a persuasive writing which we got to choose topics like our speeches. Our goal is to persuade the audience that our point of view is right! Here are examples of people we chose. Most of us did the class for the audience and some did individual people. Thank you for reading our blog we hope you enjoyed and we'll see you soon in future times.

Food For Thought Pictures

Week 4 Blog Post

This week has been awesome we have learnt a lot from food nutritionist Rita we learnt all about the food pyramid and what is good for our body and things that were occasional. She also taught us to be food detectives at the supermarket, we looked at the  back of food packets such as salt, sugar, dietary fibre and energy. Rita the food nutritionist also went to the Commonwealth Games she competed in a 100 km bike ride she told us that she ate brown rice, banana, yogurt and raisins all mixed together for her breakfast. Did you know that Nutri Grain has a whole heap of sugar which is 32.0g wow that's a lot compared to Weetbix witch is only 1.0g.

This week was maths week we have been doing something that is called a rich maths task the question was: The answer is nine penguins...what is the word problem? We had to find as many word problems as we could using this equation. We also got a choice number and we had to think of as many things as we could to do with that number e.g if you had 101 you could have done 101 dalmatians.
